Philly is a fine city, Jug. Get your slander out of here.

Pennsylvania Snapping Turtle Soup is my one go-to whenever I'm down in Philly. Super decandent, delicious and chowdery, almost gravy-like in consistency. This and a dozen oysters is probably my favorite meal.

The best I've had is at the Olde Bar, in the old historic Bookbinder's by Penn's Landing. Comes with a sherry cream which, ladled on the soup, is to die for.

Iím really enjoying it so far. Like it better than Denver, which was my last trip.

This one might be a solid no but has anyone done Egypt? Thinking about a week-long getaway far out — like New Years 2021 or something.

I can ask a friend who went. Apparently, the city limits are right by the pyramids. Which is weird af to see.

I’ve been to Egypt and travelled around quite a bit. Honestly, unless you know someone there or are super interested in ancient Egypt, there’s probably better options for you. Especially if you want to party, even a little bit, Egypt is not going to be ideal.....you’ll be relegated to western hotels unless you can befriend some Coptics.

The above said, there are some incredible, iconic things to see there. I’d definitely make it somewhere to see before you die, just not sure it’s top of the list.

this winter, I'll either be going to:
  • Iceland to see the northern lights, or
  • Cusco, Peru, to see Machu Pichu
anyone ever seen either of those?

I haven't but I know a ton of people who have gone to Iceland. No guarantee you'll actually see the northern lights.

My girlfriend has been to both and loved them but obviously very different. If you need any tips let me know.

I have read that if you go in the winter (this would be November or December), the odds are much higher.

They are, but it's still no guarantee. My parents went in December and did not see them.

I literally stood on the blocks. I think you technically weren’t supposed to, but it was extremely common to do so. They’d just yell at you if you started climbing pretty high. That said, the Mubarak regime was all about catering to tourists, so idk if that’s since changed.

My friends husband died in Peru this past year from food borne illness coupled with elevation sickness. She almost did too. If you go, be very careful about what you put in your body.

Reykjavik for New Year's Eve is supposed to be incredible. The whole city is supposedly outdoor neighborhood parties.

This is definitely good advice, but I wouldn’t want brent to overly freak out about this. It really, really sucks this happened to your friend and the elevation is definitely intense, but I don’t think it’s at all a reason not to go. My brother just came back and did the full hike and said it was great, despite adjusting to the elevation being a challenge day 1. Definitely be careful if you do go, but I wouldn’t let this put you off, especially as a guy who I think is in decent shape.

Food borne illness is always a risk when you’re traveling outside of select countries. Just need to stick to well reviewed places and avoid street food, as tasty as it may appear. Also, not sure on Peru, but in some countries you sadly should avoid any raw fruit / veg unless it’s from a western hotel or similar quality restaurant.

Basically some super rare bacteria that is in animal fecal matter. Could have been something that wasn’t washed properly, or in the hands of someone handling their food. Turns into horrific vomiting/diarrhea/severe dehydration. If you don’t get to a hospital fast enough, your body will just give up. He didn’t make it to one soon enough, it didn’t hit her until she was back in Miami, then subsequently back here in Texas. It took months to fully recover. They suspected some food they ate right before they went to see Machu Pichu.

Edit - like Rob said, I believe it was fruit.

And don’t mean to be setting off alarms or scaring people off, I have other friends that just went and came back as well with no issue. I guess it hit differently seeing as how he was a seemingly healthy dude my age and just up and collapsed on his honeymoon.

Yeah, I heard Reykjavik is a lot of fun. Our plan was to stay there and then try to find a glacier tour or something, in addition to the northern lights.

Yeah, the hike is actually the last thing I am worried about. Machu Pichu is a bucket list item for me. Also, I have read a lot about Cusco being a really cool city.
