They absolutely work, but they can be really pricey. I know Hanger Project's stuff is great.

Just don't use the hangers with the spaces on the top and you'll be fine. If you want to be really anal (which you don't, you're not that type) you get thick strong wooden hangers.

There's a certain way you're supposed to hang sweaters that you're probably not doing:

I don't do that bc it's too much work tbh. I just use hangers without the holes and I'm fine. But that's technically what you're supposed to do.

You can get a decent quantity of pretty good wooden hangers from Target on the cheap. That's what I use. I fold sweaters because hanging them stretches them out at weird places no matter what hangers you have, but I might try that trick bbd posted.

lol. reddish/walnut is very confusing to me. Do you want walnut (light brown), burgundy (purple/red) or straight up red?

Allen Edmonds is basically the only reputable brand you can get for ~$200. The good news is that chili and walnut are their 2 best colors imo. Just wait for a seconds sale and you can snag them at a steep discount.

I need a pair of dark brown loafers, but I don't want to spend that much for them. But I also don't want to get AEs bc I already have a bunch of them, I want a different brand. My other pair of Kents are my best pair of shoes so I do trust the brand.

DC Lewis makes great stuff for sure.

Carmina is kind of a bargain now though w/ the EUR way down. Standard calf shoes are going for about the same price as AE firsts, which is a steal. They have some really stylish lasts. I'd encourage you to look around their online store or Skoaktiebolaget (which has very low prices on Carminas).

You could look into Enzo Bonafe as well. Really great up and coming Italian maker. They don't have an online shop right now. I know Leffot in NYC stocks them as does Skoaktiebolaget, but neither of those options give you the EUR advantage.

Dammit Rob, now you got me looking at some Carmina Oxfords. I'm not a fan of their loafers but their oxfords are nice.

Not particularly. Though AE has huge bi-yearly sales on seconds including a 2 for $200/$250 deal that you could wait for.

If you can't swing at least $150 or so, you're better off just buying something cheap-ish that has a decent shape to it.

I think AEs are your safest bet, like Rob said you can get seconds for a solid price.

But whatever you get, the key is to maintain them. You can make a cheap pair of shoes last well beyond their years if you just take care of them. Shoe trees, avoid the rain/snow, polish once a month, and you'll be fine. Maybe change out the laces when they start getting worn.

I have a pair of old Stacy Adams that were like 50 bucks, they actually look very nice even though the sole is cheap, but I maintain them the same way I do with my AEs and they've lasted much longer than any pair I've had previously before I started actually caring about shoes.

that's because i was using their shoes as a pseudo-guide. ae is probably too much since i can't anticipate them having another sale within the next month.
