Why care about how a team plays when you can just apply last year to this one?

The Hodgson buyout talk has begun. I'm sure they don't want him playing 4th line wing again, but it's possible the writing has been on the wall for months considering we'll have five young centers who don't have a whole lot to gain by playing at a lower level. Still, he interests me. He did well during the lockout year, which was essentially his sophomore season, and got a big contract from a regime that is no longer around. Don't think he's ever been very highly regarded by the current staff.

The past two years have been just horrible for everyone on the team, pretty much. He was our leading scorer two years ago, split between two bad coaches, one who fosters youth and one who tries to grind grit out of, preferably, a veteran lineup. Took a total nosedive in this past full year under the latter. Still, he was not nearly as impressive in 2013 as I'd say Tyler Ennis was this year, both being "somebody has to score the ~45 points" leading scorer roles. Then he was just bad this year, finding less and less opportunity to play his way out of it. He's never going to be a great skater and there's a very good chance he's not a guy you look at for 50+ point production. But he'd be an intriguing pickup for somebody.

I think the upcoming Colin Wilson contract will be an interesting one in Nashville. Before falling off this year, Hodgson put up 20/24/44 in 2013 as a de facto #1 center on a rebuilding team, having just got paid as a RFA. Wilson just went 20/22/42 as a second line winger on a good team, having by far his best year under a new coach and playing wing full time in a contract year. Toss in a good playoff performance and very good even strength numbers on top. It's not quite the same, Hodgson was a high profile acquisition from a hotseat GM with top-6 center hope, Wilson is arguably a top-5 forward on a very good team, though also arguably their best between ages 21-34. I just always relate those two a bit because of their draft year and that WJC. Anyway, it probably ends up with him and compatriot Craig Smith signing similar mid-term second tier contracts while Fisher is given two years to regress before our eyes.

i feel like people would jump on hodgson. 25 with a couple of 40 point seasons? even last year, he came off an absurdly low shot %. is his contract that bad that he can't even be traded?

It's fine if you think he can be an effective second line guy. But the contract was from the last regime and I've seen nothing that would lead me to believe him being in any favor or plans of the current one, who have not been shy to cut ties with guys not their own. Wouldn't surprise me if there was an expectation around the league of him getting bought out. Pretty much any coach would be better for him than Nolan was, so it's a minor shame if this is how it ends for him here, but when Reinhart/Eichel/Grigorenko/Larsson all have a case for being in the lineup, it's not entirely insensible. Even waiting another year for one of those guys is a tough call since a buyout would cost twice as much next year.

i can't imagine waiting... don't know the state of your farm system, but it sure seems like reinhart ought to be, at worst, your 2C next year. i can't imagine eichel starting anywhere but buffalo.

but i watch my team bury players in grand rapids so they can keep resigning dan fucking cleary and so franzen can come back and finish turning his brain into jelly, so what do i know.

No, you're right. Both should be at the NHL level, but so should Larsson and (for real this time) Grigorenko. Girgensons is already established at this level, so those are 5 young guys who would be preferred centers. I see six wingers locked in (Kane, Moulson, Ennis, Gionta, Foligno, Deslauriers) with Cody McCormick also probably being around for some reason. So you have those two teenaged blue chip centers along with one of Zemgus/Larsson/Grigo down the middle and another shifted to the wing, with the other one sort of up in the air pending free agency/competition/whatever we're doing with our 4th line.

That's just playing with what we have. There is also money to spend and an owner that likes to do just that. I do know that we need new RFA contracts for Grigorenko, Larsson and Pysyk, plus Eichel's money. None of these are too crazy and we'll still have to work to get to the cap floor, even moreso after the possible buyout. A good chunk of it could go to a goalie, at least one other defenseman to take over the laughable 4 million Meszaros made last year. There's certainly money to add another effective winger to the group, which can either keep another guy in the minors or possibly create a 4th line worth having. I wouldn't hate being the ones who overpay for Michael Frolik and get a responsible guy who won't hold back young talent. Trade could be more likely, though. Even more likely is Bylsma just bringing in Craig Adams.

looks like the wings are ready to listen to offers for mantha. suddenly, half of the wings fans i've talked to think we should trade him for phaneuf or kessel, and the other half think we should trade him for ekman-larsson, as if arizona would even consider trading him. i hate the offseason, sometimes.

Chicago's lower lines were huge in the last game on the road, provided a lot of trouble. I'd like to reiterate that it's still pretty dumb that they were able to scratch Teuvo/Vermette/Versteeg for much of the playoffs. The biggest difference has clearly been Kimmo, though. Kimmo is love.

Mantha didn't win the NHL MVP and/or Conn Smythe his first year pro so obviously he's a bust and should be traded for Phaneuf.

right? just what we need: an old, #2ish D man with a huge contract. i'm sure that was the missing piece.

*sigh* sanity sure takes a break in the offseason.

sorry about y'alls coach.

at some point stamkos has to actually make a play here, if the lightning want to win.

also, the 2nd period is why this is the best playoff sport ever. nba playoffs? some shitty peyton manning team getting blown out? don't make me laugh.

This game has been pretty great. Keith scoring while Sustr looks clueless is pretty fitting for how these playoffs have gone.

San Jose was probably enamored with his playoff record.

A bit surprising that DeBoer got hired right away once again, but he'll have better talent than he usually does and his underlying metrics are pretty decent. By no means exciting, he's really done quite poorly and has not done much for young talent, but they were probably downgrading once they made the change to begin with.

Yeah they really got good in those last two rounds. I'd have gone for Tampa harder if not for Kimmo, but both are fun to watch. Got nothing really personal against either, not sure how long it will be until I care to notice that Tampa is in our division. And man, so is Detroit. Shit's weird.

Somebody is going to pay Oduya a lot but then he'll be 34 and not on Chicago and it will be kinda funny.
