But he's not worth the contract he wants. If he were, other teams would have a decent trade to offer.

I think the Patriots should trade for him.

By "true" backup, I mean a QB who will not see the field this year barring injury to the current starter. (So no rookies, no one like Rosen who will probably play eventually, etc.)

Yesterday's Mariota conversation got me thinking about how the bar for quarterbacks has gone way up in recent years.

Gone are the days of Akili Smith's 5-13 TD-INT ratio, or Jamarcus Russell's 50.0 QB rating, or Leinarts 61.9 rating. Also, they never seem to just languish on benches behind journeyman anymore (Andre Ware, Dan McGuire, Brady Quinn).

Nowadays, bust QBs either implode (Manziel) or they just get lots of playing time to prove that they can't push a team to the next level (Mariota, Winston, Tannehill, Carr, Dalton...) Some teams will settle for that kind of mediocrity as job security (they can argue it would be hard to find a QB who would actually be better) others just move on quietly.

Blaine Gabbert is still around as a back-up, though

That's only because he must have some dirt on Bruce Arians.

Baker should stop worrying about the Giants so much. Since when do starting QBs go after rookie QBs?

Winston bugs me to no end. On one hand he was second among all QBs last year in positive graded throws, but his negative throws (21st among all QBs) are so asinine that they lose games by themselves.
