Default Tabletop Gaming Thread

I've been wanting a place to talk tabletop games and we discuss in the RDT at times and on Twitter and other places I wanted to make a special thread for all our tabletop gaming. This goes for all board games, card games, dice games, role-playing, etc. Figured this would be a good place to share new games and experiences.

For example, I'm currently part of two role-playing adventures at the moment. Tuesday nights, I am DMing my own Pathfinder game with college friends. It's most of our first experience with any sort of D&D type of game and its been going pretty well. I kinda totally ripped off some old Magic the Gathering story for my campaign (while still making it unique enough). Here's the world map, which I'd bet many of you would get a kick out of:

Spoiler!

The other game I'm a part of is one with all peeps from around here. Comahan is DMing a D&D 3.5 Campaign that I'm playing in along with nerv, fenikz, and Damix. Nerv is a Thief, Damix is a Warrior, fenikz is a cleric, and I'm a Druid. We've only had four sessions so far (1 character creation and 3 playing) but it's been a lot of fun. Some highlights include Damix almost getting killed by a Leper, my wolf pet "raping bitches" as my wife put it on camera for all to hear, fenikz constantly trying to win people over by telling everyone he's a cleric, only to then have it backfire when they realize he prays to the god of death, and nerv sneaking around and causing ruckus everywhere we go.

In other related news, the new Magic: The Gathering set looks amazing. This is the first set I've been excited for since the Theros block 2.5 years ago. I'm still loving playing Commander/EDH but I think I'm actually going to a prerelease this weekend and might take a go at standard since I like the way this set looks so much.

Lastly, the best new board game I've picked up lately has been Raptor:

Spoiler!

It's a pretty simple game that's designed for two players (which is key given how hard it is to get more because we have kids and that complicates everything). The basic gist of it is that there are two sides, explorers and raptors. As the explorers, you want to capture the baby raptors to take off the island and study/tame. As the Raptor, you are the mother and you want to either get your babies to safety or eat all the explorers. You have a small deck of cards that you use to determine turn order and actions and it does require some strategy but it's not too difficult for strategy noobs like the Mrs.

So what games are you playing and/or excited for?

I would love to get involved in this kind of thing, but I have no friends who would be interested. My friends just want to play COD or FIFA which I'm usually down for. But years of the same...

I have done one night of character creation and play on a D&D game. I am a half elf wizard. Should become level two next game and will have to pick an academy to start to study with. Hard though because we have a guy who metagames so hard all the time and always tries to seduce everything.

And the new MTG releases Friday. I should be going to that as well.

My friends and I play a lot of tabletop games. Two of my favorites are Bang and Tge Betrayal at the House on the Hill. Sometime soon we are going to try a D&D role play. I'm not sure that is my thing but I'll give it a shot.

Right now, tabletop wise, I'm only playing the 1 game of D&D where I stumble through trying to run it as I lead 2 newbies thru their first game, 1 guy who hasnt played in ages, and Grizz who I lean on a lot. I'm pretty bad at a few things, and It's not exactly a well oiled machine, but it's definitely been a lot of fun for me so far. The best parts are 1) when something I created or do involving the story gets a big reaction, and that's happened a few times now, and thats so satisfying. And 2) When the players do something amazing I never expected and it flips everything on its head. Damix almost Molotov cocktailed a group of cultists inside of a church using stuff that a priest had brought to try and tend his wounds. Never expected that, and it almost worked. That was followed up by Fenikz randomly casting a 'cause fear' spell on a member of the city guard, almost getting them killed. That and the effort some of the guys put into their characters backstory. Grizz wrote a novel and nerv wasn't far behind. Really cool stuff.

I have a kind of long history with tabletop games though, and it probably got its start as a result of the first Lord of the Rings movie coming out in 2001 when I was in 6th grade. That got me to read the books, which got me to meet a few people, which got me to try out my first session of D&D.

That session of D&D brought me to a local card shop where I discovered Warhammer 40k (Dark Eldar!) and several card games, including Magic the Gathering, the Lord of the Rings TCG, the Star Wars TCG, and Yugioh. I had collected Pokemon cards before this, in elementary, but never played the game. I spent way too much of my life at this store. They had a huge open room where you could show up and play those games with others, so my friends and I would go all the time and basically just spend the day there after our parents dropped us off. I even eventually got a job there.

But as far as other games, I don't play anything right now aside from that one group of D&D, and maybe Hearthstone if you count that.

Raptor looks awesome.

It took me so long just to get a piece of string on D&D for one of my spells. I like the fact the wizard can change his though. But starting out there are so many of them.

Betrayal! My buddy got me that as a housewarming gift when we bought our house. That's a fun one. As you'd probably imagine, I always like being the betrayer

Huzzah! Is that right?

I'm in about the same situation that caddy outlined. I know I've mentioned my affinity for tabletop to Grizz a number of times but it's all talk. Friends always just want to play cards against humanity and bananagrams (nothing wrong with either of those) and most of the games I play with my family, who are the easiest to get together, are trivia based. I am at least slowly getting back into chess.

I'd play some tabletop.

I keep wanting to get a game night setup with friends, but keep failing. We all have a ton of games. Usually warm up with a round of Flux. Usually do a werewolf style game afterwards.

Haven't played a pnp in forever.

Just got this in the mail:

Latest expansion in the Legendary: A Marvel Deckbuilding game. Highly recommend this game for anyone that likes deckbuilding games. Huge variety of Marvel characters. Each expansion adds new game mechanics and characters as well as new masterminds and schemes. It makes each game unique and all the options can make the game either really difficult or really easy depending which heroes and villains you choose. They also have a Villains version where you get to play as the bad guys and try to take out Commanders like Odin, Nick Fury, or Iron Man.

Been looking at the release of the cards. I use a white black warriors so the Sorin could be used with mine.

Really not liking the new stuff MTG is doing though, making it so you have to think about so many things now. especially with the flip cards.

Half-tempted to get back into mtg, but I know I don't have the time for it.

None of my cards are standard, and that's what I'd want to play.

I do have an Ugin, so maybe I'll trade it on puca and build one or two standard decks and keep basically no other cards.

Standard is just a bitch to keep up with for me, not to mention expensive. That's why I like EDH, not needing 4 of each $10 card to be competitive is nice.

Did a prerelease only with 13 people. Finished 4th and got three extra packs.

My promo card was To The Slaughter.

First pack I got an Olivia.

With the three packs at the end I got a Relentless Dead.

I of course ran a red black deck that had vampires and all.

Few of the cards I used to help me out was Sin Prodder, Markov Dreadknight, Accursed Witch, Stromkirk Mentor,Stensia Maquerade (foil), Pick the Brain.

Two cards that was so good for me that basically won me two games were

Sanitarium Skeleton - 1 black for a 1/2 and for 2 colorless and one black return it from the graveyard to your hand. This card I just kept bringing back and he kept stopping their other guys.

Skin Invasion - 1 red to enchant a creature, and the creature has to attack each combat if able. Once the creature dies morphs into a 3/4 creature for me. I used this on other players best cards before they can pump them up.

Overall I went 3-1 with a 6-2 record. Lost the first match because the dude destroyed Sin Fodder and Olivia to start the first match, and the second I got mana screwed. For $26 I got roughly $60 worth of cards, some a lot of people want.
