Does anyone have the Google On hub? Would you recommend it?
I'm currently using the router that comes with Optimum (cable company). I need to increase my signal strength and range, so I was considering this. It's on the pricey side though, which is why I'm hesitant. |

3 floors. I went with google wifi. I'm satisfied with it. There are other mesh networks with better signal strength at the access points away from the main access point but they're a lot more expensive. The ease of use, and overall interface of google wifi and good enough performance was enough for me to go with it.

For a brief moment in time I was thinking about running wires all over the house but this is good enough. If I ever need more speed I hook right into the router and I'm fine. |

Alright fellas, I need help finding a laptop that fits my needs.
I'm currently using a USB as my PC, with Ubuntu as my OS. But I need more space, and processing power. I love the convenience of having my PC with me at all times with the USB, but at the end of the day it has its limitations. What I need: I'm primarily using my home PC for files, surfing the net, libre office suite, and I do some SQL on there but nothing major. I don't think I need something extravagant, I'm not playing games or movies on my PC, I just need it for the basics. With that in mind, I'm looking to spend like 500 on a laptop that I can run Ubuntu on. I don't want to run it virtually, I want it to be the OS of the system. Any recommendations? Should I still stick with the USB and just get a chromebox or mini desktop or something to boot from? |

I'm pretty sure I'm talking to myself here, but for those interested:
For those of you looking for a laptop that's extremely secure and private: https://gizmodo.com/how-to-become-a-...sms-1798505852 You can't get any better than this. Physical switches to shut up audio and video, their own motherboards etc to prevent data from being retrievable, this is as good as it gets. Pricey, but if you're the paranoid type, this is the laptop to get. Would be very difficult to get hacked on with this, not impossible, but very difficult. I've changed my approach, I'm building a Linux desktop, and I'll continue to use my USB Linux PC as my portable on the go PC whenever I need it. If I work on the portable PC, I'll just move the docs or whatever into my desktop. This is the desktop I'm going with: https://system76.com/desktops/meerkat I'm strongly considering connecting this to my TV, so I can use this instead of my Fire TV as my media player, but that's to be determined. I still consider myself a novice Linux user, if anyone here has any tips or recommendations, it's appreciated. EDIT: Did more hw, and I can just buy an intel NUC and save a shit ton of money vs buying this rebranded NUC from system76. Just would have to do some installs myself, which isn't a big deal considering the cost savings. Last edited by bigbluedefense; 11-09-2017 at 08:11 PM. |

So basically you need the cheapest windows laptop there is. You don't need crazy storage or processing power. Just something that has Microsoft Office, can surf the net, and won't crap out on you every 5 minutes.
Get a cheap HP laptop that's on sale this black friday and call it a day. Just make sure you're on top of the virus protection and you'll be fine. EDIT: I like the thinkpad Brent posted. |

I would recommend not getting an HP laptop. Their heat dissipation has always been crap. Lenovo is probably the best mainstream office brand (HP, Dell, Lenovo).

Yeah I like Lenovo.
I've had HP before with no issues, but maybe I got lucky. You're safer with Lenovo, you'll pay a little more but the peace of mind is worth it. |

fucking windows updates.
my win10 updated and then my videos started all lagging behind the audio. i update my gpu driver and adjust some settings and the video lag is practically gone. but now everything freezes (lags) for ~0.25s every 5-10s and this is how you make a 21st century desk monkey go mad. it's so gradually infuriating working with this lag |
