I'm not a fan of win10. I know I'm in the minority on that, but I just don't like the OS at all.

Ok so I got Kodi and installed the No Limits build. What do I need to do to keep everything updated and make sure it works fine?

Also what else should I do to have fun with Kodi? Is there a better build than No Limits?

Remind me to come back to you on this breh, I have a long response to this.

Or ask Damix to copy and paste what I mentioned to him to you, bc I'd basically tell you the same thing.

As far as updating is concerned, there's no auto updating. You have to do it manually. Just keep up to date with it by following the new version releases of Kodi and update your build as you go along. A good way to think of it is, you probably have to do a manual update every 2 months or so. Follow Frank Ogbana (sp) on youtube, he's the guy who will lead you down the right path.

I have updated Kodi once since I got it last year so you don't have to be up to date for it to work

and no one likes Windows 10, it may force me to Linux or whatever

I recently changed from Ubuntu to Linux Mint, and I gotta say, I like Linux Mint a lot more. The UI is nicer and it's more stable than Ubuntu. Only use Ubuntu over Mint if you have hardware compatibility issues.

I consider myself a beginner when it comes to Linux, but I also don't buy this notion that you should use the more complicated distro if you're a more advanced user (fwiw, Ubuntu is also considered a beginner's distro). That's dumb to me. It shouldn't have to be complicated. Just use what's easy and what works. I don't see myself ever needing any of the other distros.

Once you go Linux you'll never want to go back to windows. I love it, I have no regrets.

You probably have a lot of old add ons that don't work too well anymore if you haven't updated your Kodi in a year tbh. Lot of changes happened over the past year.

To get back to you on this WMD, I use Kodi, Terrarium TV, Mobdro, and I download emulators for NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64. Kodi is open source, so you can have tons of add ons here that are outside the scope of live tv, tv shows and movies, so it all depends on what you want to do. I also programmed my universal remote to work with Kodi, as well as developed alexa skills to work with it. I also have some add ons for viewing security cameras.

Mobdro for live PPV tv. Terrarium TV as my Netflix replacement. Kodi as your one stop shop for everything.

And the emulators for gaming.

You can also look into IPTV if you're willing to take it there, but that's not for everyone. I have Sling TV as well.

I'm currently running the no limits build, but I'm also behind on my updates. I gotta upgrade to 17.6. I might delay until 18.0 comes out before I do another build, but for now Kodi No Limits is good. There's tons of builds though, don't limit yourself to a single build. Like I said, follow Frank on youtube, he updates daily and he'll lead you the right way.

Anyone here running their own server at home? Is it worth it? Any advice?

I'm a control freak. That's really it. I already VPN, but I want to own and control my own data.

It might not be worth the hassle though. I have a raspberry pi that I can turn into my own server, if that's not good enough I'd have to either get an old pc from someone and turn it into a server or buy 1, but I'm debating if it's worth it or not.

Wouldn't your electricity bill go through the roof?

Na, not for a single server. If I can get my raspberry pi to work we're talking about 6, maybe 7 watts. There's no fans either so I don't have to worry about noise.

Electric only becomes an issue for people who are running multiple servers. The bigger cost is getting either a static IP from my ISP or going with a dynamic IP.

I'm already VPNing anyway so that doesn't really matter.

Run CentOS on a pi and see what happens? It's intriguing, but not sure if it's worth the headache. If anyone here runs their own server I want to know why, and if they recommend it or not.

Looking at you Damix.

Not sure yet tbh. I want to learn more and understand the pros/cons before I decide what direction I want to go in.

I think the biggest advantage I can think of is remote desktop. *thinking emoji*

I think I need to understand this in more detail before I do anything. I feel like I'm only half understanding the applications and benefits of this.

Yeah so I decided against making my own cloud. Fuck it. Too much work and it's not worth the effort.

Maybe in the future but right now it's just not worth it.

Chrome Remote Desktop works perfect fine for remote desktops.

I thought about it, and unless I'm using at least 3 different computers, there's no point to have remote desktop.

I can't remote desktop my work laptop. And the only other computer I have is my personal PC at home. So there's no point. I was thinking it would be cool if I left a chromebook or whatever on the 1st floor that I could remote desktop to when I'm being lazy, but then I figured just walk up the fucking stairs. Problem solved and a lot cheaper.

Maybe in the future if I want to run a laptop terminal, desktop terminal, and set top box all through the same mainframe it'll be something I can entertain again, but for now, it's just not worth it.

I'm having connection issues with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse with Mint 18.2.

I downloaded blueman but I'm still having issues.

My keyboard is a logitech K810. Anyone have any suggestions? I know there's a couple of linux guys in here. Do any of you have bluetooth keyboards?
