I started reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy today. Between having no chapters and no quotation marks, I think it's going to be a tough read for me.

I finished broom of the system today and found it be a fun read, though pretty apparent its early foster wallace. Gravity's rainbow is next on my list. Not sure im looking forward to it.

Its funny you say that. I found broom to be the least...self indulgent and to not have long boring sections. That said, i don't think it reached some of the highs of infinite jest.

Ive tried reading gravity's rainbow about a year ago but got swamped with work and couldn't focus on all the random characters who may or may not have been real. Been meaning to get back to it.

I hated The Road.

Had trouble deciding on a book to read so rereading one of my favorites right now - Shogun by James Clavell

i think it was the best *story*. though i agree that some of the parts of infinite jest were incredible, i didn't find the whole to be that compelling.

GR definitely took me a few tries before i was ready for it, but it was fantastic once i got there. sort of like anathem, in a way.

I have a feeling I'm not going to like it. I'm only about 15 pages in but, in addition to the things that already kind of annoy me, there is the characters not having names and and the vocabulary he uses that I feel is going to grate on my nerves. But at least it is pretty short. After the Road I'm going to read the Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

The only book by Clavell I've read is King Rat. We watched the movie in my Public Administration class in college and had to write a report about the different types of leadership displayed in the movie so I read the book to give a little more backbone to the paper. It was pretty decent.

King Rat is part of the Asian Saga, which are all excellent. I probably like them best in story line chronological order.

Shogun - Tai-Pan - Gai-Jin - King Rat - Noble House

Whirlwind is 'eh'

LOL. I do love books, may be I'm a bit old school but I like reading more than watching or listening. At the end of the day it's a matter of tastes.

Assuming you've read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Goodkind's Sword of Truth series and if you think it's as terrible as I do.

i *loved* the first book. there was so much promise there. then it just got worse and worse. and then it fell off a cliff. his ayn rand garbage got in the way, his characters were completely stale, and his plot was the same in every single book. ugh.

Agree the Rand stuff really killed it. The world he started building, with the magic system and characters initially introduced, was pretty good. But the shift to the "Old World" and the ongoing diatribe against socialism or whatever and the ridiculously overpowered hordes pouring in... just really stupid.

And even before then though it seemed like he was just stealing a lot of devices from Jordan.

Sisters of Light = Aes Sedai
Blood of the Fold = Children of the Light (Whitecloaks)
Mord-Sith = Far Dareis Mai
Sisters of the Dark = Black Ajah
Male magic users are bad in both

Sorry for nerding up this thread but I forgot how much I hate SoT.
