Male magic users are bad in both

Sorry for nerding up this thread but I forgot how much I hate SoT.
i think the worst part was that kahlan was like, the definition of useless after book 1. she was a horribly written idiot, who wasn't typically able to function without badly breaking something, which was only fixed or resolved by deus ex richard, at the last moment, every time. the old world shit just made it all even worse. it was the only series i've ever read that got more frustrating to read faster than GoT.

I'm so glad I never wasted my time on GoT. I feel like I would become enraged very quickly at the lack of movement in the story, if going by the show is any indication.

To each their own, but the extra back story you get in the books is quite worth it for me.

Ive heard a lot of conflicting things. I feel that it just comes down to how invested/how in love with the story/lore you are.

meh. the first two books were great. after that, it just got worse and worse. the last book was just bad. i won't read anything after that, i'd rather watch hbo finish the series.

This is only an issue in the last two books. The first three are fine.

Tombstone Val Kilmer is the best Val Kilmer.

He's far more than "just an alcoholic". But probably still not super relevant. Also I forgot this wasn't the RDT.

oh, oops. this is what happens when i try to fight brent while i'm at work.

books. for anyone into fantasy/sci fi (but more sci fi than anything), tad williams' otherland trilogy is absolutely brilliant. in the vein of snow crash, but not *quite* as fantastic.

Uhm. No.

One, it's four books, but I don't blame you for thinking three, the 4 books combined have the content for 1.5, maybe 2 books.

It is an awesome concept (which is cool because they are making an MMO out of it), and he's a great world builder but his writing is fucking terrible. On and on about meaningless crap and "imagery."

Same thing with his Shadowmarch series, just way too much unneeded descriptions.

I'll often read series reviews that say that the series could be cut in half, but this was the first one I actually agreed on.

hm, i only saw the three on my bookshelf, there's probably one on a different shelf. and, in a lot of his writing, i fully agree. i don't like his standard fantasy stuff. but i felt like the world building, and the VR/avatar concept he created was incredibly well done. it's not william gibson cyberpunk, but i felt like, for that series, he kept in the light geek sf tradition quite well.

Finished the Road. Meh, it certainly isn't one of the best pieces of fiction in recent history. It's actually pretty mediocre. Walk down the road. Boy asks if they are going to die. Dad says no. Find a building. Get some supplies. Rinse, lather, repeat. The diologue is nothing special, the imagery is repetitive (everything is burned and ash covered), there is almost no backstory. How this gets near universal praise is mind boggling.
