I stumbled upon this interview yesterday. Ignoring the name of the site, it's a really thoughtful take from a guy who grew up in Appalachia, went on to study at Yale Law, and serve in the military, talking about why poor working class voters like Trump. It also talks about how many liberals can be elitist dicks without realizing it. Highly recommended.

That's always the appeal that petty populism & anti-elitism hold. This is eloquent, but is this really news to people who pay even the smallest amount of attention to the world around them? Trump's appeal scares me and frustrates me...especially with my greencard status up in the air at the moment...but it's not confusing at all; it's the same crap that's kept Putin in power for approaching two decades.

I've worked most of my adult life in the sciences, am the son & grandson of PhD holders, come from a family that has been very successful since coming to this country 25 years ago, I intend to marry a black girl who was beaten up by the chicago PD because of the color of her skin, and Trump terrifies me...and I still want to punch you in your smug face for this.

Neither side is free from criticism. Liberals are usually terrible with economics because they don't understand that everything has a cost, and conservatives are typically racist douchenozzles.

Like everything else in life, there needs to be a balance between the 2 sides.

And how many things in life only have 2 sides? Why not put as much as effort into finding the best option for running this country as is put into delivering people the best options for trash food or sugar-water?

Yeah, that's a good thing to work towards. We don't have that luxury this election cycle unfortunately.

Honestly, we only seem to care about these topics once every 4 years. We're part of the problem.

If we cared this much about issues our country faces all the time then a lot of the change you want would have already happened.

But instead we get angry for 3 months every 4 years, the politicians promise you a bunch of shit they won't ever commit to, you forget about it immediately, only to remember about it 4 years later and get angry again for 3 months.

Rinse and repeat.
